What we want to achieve

About the Campaign

Together with Less Talk we support the small association Yoga and Sport for Refugees in their sports, martial arts and self-defence programmes for refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos and in Athens. The association offers a legal framework for this and provides rooms for training. Our goal is to collect the annual rent for both training rooms amounting to 10,800 euros as well as the necessary training equipment. The focus of the association is on the self-organisation of the refugees. There are also special offers for women. For example, the self-defence courses aim to strengthen women physically and psychologically and thus give them more self-confidence. They are to be supported directly and effectively in their everyday lives. Empowerment is the ultimate goal. With this campaign, we want to help people on the ground in a targeted and direct way. For some refugees, this creates concrete perspectives. It also takes away some of the powerlessness of people who want to help. For the political struggle against the inhumane camp system and the racist and exclusionary migration policy of the EU, such campaigns are a good addition, but never a substitute.

Yoga and Sport for Refugees

origin and projects

The NGO “Yoga and Sport for Refugees” appears as a response to the Mediterranean humanitarian crisis, in which thousands of people fleeing the war risk their lives to reach European coasts. These people are abandoned and isolated in southern Europe, closed in refugee camps with inhuman conditions.

Yoga and Sport for Refugees was launched in 2017 on the island of Lesvos. The aim of the association is to accompany refugees, give them dignity and defend human rights, which are constantly violated in camps like Moria, which has recently become the biggest disgrace in Europe. In the camps there is a persistent situation of violence, sexism, conflict and despair. In the current situation, Yoga and Sport for Refugees helps them not to lose hope and to be able to leave the refugee camp.

The association aims to empower refugees and migrants through sports activities, integrating them into the community and improving their physical and mental health. This will enable them to find a way out of the monotony, frustration and stagnation of their current situation.

In addition, one of the basic goals is to make refugees, as users of sports activities, trainers responsible for their own projects, so that they can be integrated into the community and gain security and self-confidence.

These activities break through ethnic and religious barriers and create a space of encounter and cooperation between cultures in which everyone participates.
